Health care construction continues to rise

Australia’s spending on health-sector construction is likely to continue, with annual building costs to hit $5.3 billion in 2012-13. According to construction consultant Davis Langdon, spending on big health projects such as hospitals will continue for the next two years, with many planned projects due for construction over that period. Davis Langdon says spending on healthcare projects would level off after 2013, as the building of hospitals wound down. It says there are several reasons for the boom in spending on healthcare projects, the most obvious being population growth. According to Davis Langdon, construction spending in the health sector rose from $1.9 billion in 2005-06 to $3.7 billion in 2009-10 - an annual growth rate of 18%.
