A developer has proposed a $100 million resort to provide urgently-needed accommodation for up to 1,200 mine workers. The plans submitted to Port Hedland Council include air-conditioned modular units, a swimming pool, gym, tennis courts, cinema room, bar, lawn bowls and an indoor cricket. It will be built on 12ha near Port Hedland airport which will be leased from the council. Rapid expansion in the port’s operations will demand an extra 2,000-3,000 workers by mid-2009. Developer Compass hopes the plan will net $53 million profit over the duration of the contract.
