An expansion of Ipswich Hospital’s emergency department plus an additional 84 beds at the site will see fewer patients transported to Brisbane hospitals, according to health officials. Master planning is under way on the $128 million upgrade to the hospital, which includes a $6.7 million expansion of the Emergency Department for paediatrics. Construction is due to start in 2011. Ipswich Hospital medical services director Dr Gerry Costello says the expansion of emergency care, surgery, critical care, maternity and medical imaging services mean the Ipswich Hospital will be able to properly handle the region’s booming population.
