A $2.6 billion upgrade of east coast freight lines will cut rail travel times between Sydney and Brisbane by up to two hours, The Australian reports. Travel times on rail links from Sydney to Melbourne will also be reduced, according to new timetables from Australian Rail Track Corporation. The ARTC says rail transport will be cheaper than road and more environmentally-friendly. The first stage of the upgrade is complete and work on the Sydney-Melbourne section will be completed by the end of the year, the ARTC says.
