Townsville Council has approved the $70 million expansion of Castletown Shoppingworld to include a Big W, 30 extra shops, better public transport facilities and 800 extra car spaces. Developer McConaghy Properties says the expansion has been planned following its purchase of 17 residential lots, mostly on Barryman Street in 2006. Council planning chairman David Crisafulli says the additional 11,000m2 of retail space will lift total retail space in the area to 55,000m2 - the most allowable under the current town plan.
