BHP sells WA nickel mine

BHP Billiton has sold its Ravensthorpe nickel mine to Canadian copper producer First Quantum Minerals for $376 million. The new owners say they are committed to re-opening the mine "within a realistic timeframe". BHP closed the $2.3 billion project in January, costing 1800 jobs and sent shock waves through the Ravensthorpe and Hopetoun communities. BHP Billiton, in a statement to the stock exchange, says: "It is expected the sale will be finalised during the first quarter of 2010 calendar year."
