Abbot Point, 25km north of Bowen, has emerged as the most likely site for the alumina refinery needed as part of Chalco's $3billion Arurkun bauxite project. The refinery will create 2300 jobs during construction and 600 jobs after completion. Chalco has a development licence to mine on Cape York under the Government's Indigenous Land Use Agreement. It's expected the project will deliver $60 million in royalties to the local Wik people.
