Developers Leighton Holdings and Devine have applied to council to develop South Bank Townsville – a $1.2 billion urban renewal project on 17ha of former railway land. The 10-year development will feature 1,500 apartments, 100 townhouses, 40,000m2 of office space and 10,000m2 of retail space. There will be a 3ha park fronting Ross Creek and pedestrian bridges across the creek. Developers are confident in Townsville’s ability to sustain the project, saying it had “the most balanced regional economy in Australia”.
