Garrett can't stop Sydney power station

Environment Minister Peter Garrett has informed Campbelltown Council the Federal Government is unable to prevent the Leafs Gully power plant from going ahead. Then Planning Minister and now NSW Premier Kristina Keneally approved energy giant AGL’s $200 million peaking power plant at Leafs Gully, 15km by road from Campbelltown’s CBD, in August 2009.  The 360mw gas-fired station will operate for up to 15% of the year during periods of high demand, but the council fears the plant could become a baseload facility. Campbelltown Mayor Aaron Rule says the council will continue to fight the approval despite the latest setback.
