Retail spending, new-home sales up in April

The economy continues to deliver better-than-expected numbers, with retail spending still at record levels and new home sales up for the fourth consecutive month. Retail sales rose 0.3% in April, on top of the the 2.2% rise in March. Total retail sales of $19.4 billion were almost 7% higher than April 2008. Sales of new homes were up 0.5% in April, reaching a level 22% higher than in December 2008. The Housing Industry Association is predicting a recovfery in home building in the second half of 2009.
