Sydney desalination plant comes at high price

Posted on 9/10/2008

Sydney’s desalination plant off Kurnell Peninsula is almost half finished but residents and NSW taxpayers are paying a high price for the $1.9 billion project. With Sydney dams 66% full some are questioning the value of the project, which is directly related to a 17% increase in council water and sewerage bills this year. In addition, a 63-turbine wind farm is being constructed at Bungendore to offset electricity demands of the plant. Other infrastructure required for the plant is expected to cause noise, vibration and dust problems for residents before its completion in 2012.
