The winds of opportunity assure Portland

PORTLAND is Victoria's oldest town and, if some of the major projects planned in the southwest come off, it will become its newest boomtown.

With an economy based on its aluminium smelter, export port and links to the timber industry, Portland stands to benefit from plans for a series of gas-fired, wind, geothermal and wave energy power plants. Portland is unusual in that it is a relatively small regional centre (population 11,000) with a growing international port.
