Townsville short of student tenancies

A Townsville accommodation shortage has left hundreds of university students without a home as the start of the academic year approaches. James Cook University's accommodation officer Renee Sugars says 180 international and domestic students are on the waiting list for booked-out on-campus accommodation. They will now have to compete with hundreds of other new students looking for accommodation in the city. Sugars says students often needed to compromise to find a place to stay before the semester begins. The rental crunch has left Townsville with a vacancy rate of an all-time low 1%.
