Vic Govt approves water pipeline

The Victorian Government has approved the preferred route for a 70km pipeline that will pump 75 billion litres of water every year from the Goulburn River to Melbourne. The project has been unpopular with residents in Victoria’s north who accuse Melbourne of stealing their water. The Government says the water is “savings” secured by a recent $2 billion upgrade of the region’s leaking water systems. Approval of Federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett is now needed for the project to proceed.
