An astronomy research centre has opened at the University of Western Australia, as part of the bid to secure the $2.5 billion Square Kilometre Array (SKA) telescope project. The International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research will form a base of astronomy experts for the SKA, which will be built near Geraldton between 2012 and 2020 if Australia wins the right to host the project, in competition with South Africa.
