Granny Flats In Demand
Forget about media rooms and home offices, the most popular added extra buyers are after when searching for property is a Granny Flat.
Analysis of online searches by Domain shows searches for the term “granny flat” are becoming more popular, as buyers seek out properties with some value add.
In Sydney, it is now the most searched term, overtaking previous leaders, waterfront and views.
In Perth, the search term “granny flat” ranked second, behind “swimming pool”, while Brisbane buyers are looking for “dual living” properties, particularly in traditionally family-oriented suburbs such as Sherwood, Indooroopilly, Holland Park, and Yeronga.
Pool remains top of the search terms in Adelaide, although “granny flat” also makes it into the top ten in that city.
According to Domain analysis in all capital cities, buyers are looking for options that give them the ability to house extended family, generate additional income, or create versatile living arrangements.
Head of research and economics, Dr Nicola Powell, says the results say a lot about generational demographic shifts and the move toward multigenerational living.
